Ghost nest

"Ghost Nest" is an installation created by Angela Sandwith from abandoned fishing nets, ropes, and plastic items collected on beaches in East Durham, UK. This gigantic nest-like structure rests on a steel frame and serves as an artistic interpretation of human impact on the environment. Inspired by bird nests, Angela used the concept of biomimicry to capture natural forms and structures. During the day, the installation draws attention with brightly colored, cut ropes interwoven with various plastic objects, encouraging viewers to reflect on the materials used and explore the space around the nest. At night, the installation comes to life with white electroluminescent (EL) wires, creating a steady, subtle light. Inside the nest, plastic objects contain LEDs programmed to gradually brighten and dim, creating a flickering effect. At the center of "Ghost Nest," three spotlights create a dynamic play of light, resembling a witch’s cauldron, where the colors of the cut and burned rope seem to move, giving the installation a lively character. "Ghost Nest" carries a global message about the negative effects of ghost fishing and pollution of rivers, seas, and coastlines. The installation highlights the urgent need to protect the natural environment and encourages reflection on our impact on the planet.
